If any members of this community would be interested in joining a community of movie-interested folks looking to discuss film ad campaigns/trailers/marketing, the promotional pushes given by studios to various films, and other more publicity/awards-related film discussion, a new community, f_y_c, is now going. There will be some obvious appearance-tweaking and such going on in the near future, but I'd relish some posts to it from someone other than me. So . . . check it out, if you've got the time.

Well here it is.
This weeks movie is Wet Hot American Summer

Ok to be honest I have never seen this movie but I guess thats what this is all about right? I tried to find a good picture of the poster but no luck guess everyone is cracking down to make sure that no one get a free ride.

In case you have forgotten how this all works its quite simple. Go rent the movie then post your thoughts about the movie either in this post or make your own but please use the LJ cut as not to ruin it for others. Then next week another movie will be picked, and the circle of life starts anew.

Results of the Pick-the-Nominees Poll
So the results are in . . . and the jaws are slowly being picked up off the floor. What a list indeed. No Nicole Kidman, no Scarlett Johansson (sniff sniff) . . . in fact, only two nominations in the "top 8" categories for Cold Mountain, and no acting noms for LOTR. So it's no surprise that the scores in the Oscar poll took a hit.

And speaking of which . . . I will no longer use this same format for polling with trying to speculate two months out who the potentials could be. Obviously that didn't work this time around, as six people or films made it to the list that weren't even on my "list of 15". So, fear not, the format will be changed next year. Or you can just make your own poll if you want. For any of these "did not appear" names, users who took the poll will get the same number of points as if they HAD picked that the first time they took the poll.

And before any scores go up here, know that I played by EXACTLY the same rules as everyone else for my own picks.

Nevertheless, I did have the highest total score of 163 points. In a close second was poetpainter77 with 159. franticlovepoet was also close at 152 points, while missizzy and rossboss rounded out the top five with 150 and 145 points, respectively.

If you look at the total number of correct guesses (and this is unofficial, as I have to tweak things for Keisha's nom in the leading rather than supporting category), things change slightly. poetpainter77 had 29 out of 34 possible correct, while myself and ibentmywookie scores 28 out of 34. ibentmywookie, if only your answers had been submitted sooner, you coulda been a contendah. fairestcat and franticlovepoet scored 25 each. Also, a special Jury (?) Prize goes out to dots58, the ONLY poll-taker to correctly pick that The Barbarian Invasions would be nominated for Best Original Screenplay.

So . . . unless someone beats me to it (which I really wouldn't mind), a pick-the-winners poll will be up here soon. Maybe today, maybe tomorrow.

I'm new
Well, this is my first entry in this community, but I am a dyed in the wool movie buff! I love seeing an random actors in one film and then tracing them to another film, or even commercials. I also love movie quotes. My mission for this weekend is to go see Big Fish. I will see this movie, oh yes, I will see it.

Oscar poll still open
It's not too late to take the annual LJ Oscar nomination poll! Just click here before 7:00 a.m. CDT on January 27th, and your guess will count. If you have already taken the poll and wish to change your answers, you may do so. However, any changes from the last time you have updated your guesses will only count for the maximum number of points available for the day (2 points for any guesses between now and next Tuesday morning at 8:00 CDT, 1 point for any between then and the end of the poll).

Remember, any nominees who don't appear on the list of potential nominees will count for EVERYBODY, so no more whining about why Alec Baldwin or Patricia Clarkson (for Pieces of April) or anyone else isn't on there. This glitch should be taken care of next year.

Movie Trivia
Does anyone know of any good movie-trivia websites? I work in a video store, and we have this trivia board behind the counter that changes daily. Each customer that gets the question right gets their name entered into a drawing for free stuff. I'd like to find a site that has a list of good movie trivia in the form of Q & A that I can use as a source.

updating your Oscar guesses
If anyone who has taken the Oscar Nomination Poll wants to update their guesses, feel free to do so at any time before the nominations are announced. Any picks which remain the same as your original guesses will remain at the same point value for which they were submitted; any changes will count for whatever the point value is at the time you update.

Thanks to all who have taken the poll so far! You've kept me busy!

Oscar nomination poll deadline #1
If you've been wanting to take the annual Oscar nomination poll, and have just been waiting until the last moment to get the best possible jump on the nominations, you now have just under 24 hours to take the poll and get the most possible points for your guesses.

Go here to take the poll by 8:00 a.m. CDT tomorrow (December 18th). After this time, correct guesses will receive only four points each, and this number will keep dropping as the nomination deadline draws near.

BTW, my apologies for some names that have now emerged as bigger contenders who were not included in November. If any of these people should get nominated, everyone taking the poll gets some free points (the same as if they had correctly picked a nominee at that point).
